Mahalia Jackson – Gospel (Vogue VJD 537)

Jazzy God music double album compilation from the recognised master of the form. This is straightforward gospel from early in Jackson’s career featuring just piano, organ, drums and that voice. It was astonishingly popular at the time while making few concessions, so far as I can tell, to the commercialism that characterises her later Columbia stuff.

Effortless, graceful and stirring, it almost makes me wish I believed.

I got this at an animal charity shop in Rhodes Minnis–it’s the closest one to me, why don’t I go more often?  What wrong me?
