Roberta Flack – First Take (1969) (K 40040)

Roberta Flack’s understated, jazzy, killingly soft debut. Far less histrionic, though no less emphatic than label sister Aretha, the band (including Flack herself on piano) stretch out confidently (as the title implies) leaving plenty of space between the notes. Virtuosic string basswork by Ron Carter features heavily.

A pound to you sir, said the Hythe Cricket Club Bootfair.
