Caribbean featuring Harry Belafonte and the Islanders

Guilty as charged for buying this one purely for the rather attractive cover – and what a damn fine thing it is.  Playing it (near mint condition this babe) gave a couple of suprises – firstly Harry Belafonte shares one side with The Islanders hosting the other – old Harry simply does nothing whatsoever for these ears – so lets forget him here and now …  The Islanders however are damn damn fine – a sort of skanking-uptempo-grooving unit if ever there was one – no idea who they are, when this was recorded (late 50s/early 60s perhaps ?) – The thing was release on the ‘World Record Club’ label – catalog number T276  …   the track listing is as follows :

  • When the Yankees are Gone
  • Lie Stone Dead in the Market
  • The Donkey Song
  • Tomorrow Man
  • Mary Walk

A lovely piece of plastic indeed !!

came across a copy of this in Cancer Research yesterday – but it had the wrong record in it!! almost bought it for the cover alone, but it just didn’t feel right..plus i really wanna hear some more of that Islanders magic..

Someone I know has been searching for this for years – and you go and stumble upon a sleeve – should grab it for the wall – will rip the rest of the tracks for you if you want – fancy having them in the car myself – good stuff !

Picked up a copy of this today at a boot fair (for the cover of course). It’s in EX condition all round. Will look forward to playing Islanders side.

This could be the final straw for the record case that holds my “sexy covers”. Gonna have to get a bigger one!

Just picked up this album today at a local charity shop, I Hadn’t heard of the Islanders before but as mentioned in this blog I picked up the vinyl album for the cover. I appreciate the idea of providing the listener with the magnificent sound of the islanders with an entire Side B dedicated to them. A Similar album to Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’ featuring the works of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, world Music just blows you away. Side A is ok, typical swing voice and fairly ordinary but Side B will blow you away!

I remember this album from my childhood. Searching for it on Rhapsody, I came across ‘Let’s Do The Limbo Rock’ album by King Prince and the Islanders. It features a number identical tracks to the second side of this album, so it is definitely the same artists.
